Terms of service
Last updated
squidmaps is run by SQUIDMAPS, LLC, a New York limited liability company (“we” or “us”). These are short terms for the beta; fuller terms will replace them before the beta ends, and we’ll tell you before they do. By using squidmaps, you agree to them. Our privacy policy explains what we collect.
Who can use squidmaps
You need to be at least 13, and old enough where you live to agree to these terms (or have a parent or guardian agree for you). If you use squidmaps for an organization, you’re agreeing for it too. During the beta, accounts are by invitation.
It’s a beta
squidmaps is unfinished. Features will change, move or go away, sometimes without notice; things will break; and the service may be slow or unavailable. We may need to migrate or, rarely, reset data. We’ll do our best not to lose your work, but we can’t promise it: export copies of maps that matter to you from the map menu. It’s free during the beta, and we won’t charge you for anything without your agreement (see pricing).
Your account
Accounts are personal, so please don’t share yours. You sign in with links we email you, so keep your email account secure and don’t forward sign-in links.
Your username is part of your profile and every map’s link. Don’t pick one that impersonates someone or infringes a trademark; we may change or reclaim a username that does.
Emails from us
Being in the beta means hearing from us. Besides sign-in links and messages about your account, we’ll email beta participants updates on the beta, about every week or two: what’s new and what’s changed, what we’re working on, requests for feedback, and changes to these terms or pricing. These come with being in the beta, so there’s no opting out of them short of leaving it, but you can always reply to tell us they’re too frequent. We won’t send you marketing or newsletters unless you ask for them.
Your maps
Your maps and what you put in them are yours. You give us permission to store, process and show them only as needed to run squidmaps and do what you ask, like publishing a map. We won’t sell your content, use it for ads, or use it to train AI models.
You’re responsible for what you add, so only upload data and images you have the right to use and share.
If you send us ideas or feedback, we may use them to improve squidmaps without owing you anything.
Publishing is public
Maps are only visible to you until you publish them. Once published, anyone with the link can see a map, it’s listed on your profile, and it can be embedded on other sites. Anyone viewing it can also download its data, including properties that aren’t shown on the map, and uploaded photos can contain where they were taken. Check your data before you publish. Unpublishing or deleting a map takes it down here, but can’t undo copies made elsewhere.
Maps sent to squidmaps with an import link, by an AI assistant say, can be seen by anyone with the link until someone adds them to their account, so don’t put anything private in them.
Be decent
Don’t use squidmaps to:
- break the law or infringe anyone’s copyright or other rights;
- expose private information about people, like where someone lives, without their permission;
- threaten, harass or target people, or help anyone stalk or harm them;
- impersonate people, spam, or spread scams or malware;
- attack, overload or misuse squidmaps or the services it relies on.
Maps about difficult subjects are welcome; maps that target people aren’t.
Removing content
We don’t review every map, and we don’t have to. But we may unpublish, remove or limit maps, or suspend or close accounts, when we decide it’s needed to enforce these terms, protect people, or deal with a legal or security risk. When someone’s safety is at risk, we may act first and look into it after. We’ll usually tell you why, unless that would be unsafe or unlawful. We may keep a copy of removed content and of reports when we need to for legal reasons.
To report a map, including one that shows your personal information, use Report this map on it, or email [email protected] with its link.
Copyright complaints
If you believe a map infringes your copyright, send a notice to our designated agent:
SQUIDMAPS, LLC, Attn: Copyright Agent
1410 Broadway #1102, New York, NY 10018
347-709-5897
[email protected]
Your notice should include:
- Your physical or electronic signature.
- The work you believe was infringed.
- The link to the map, and what in it is infringing.
- How to contact you: address, phone number and email.
- A statement that you believe in good faith that the use isn’t authorized by you, your agent or the law.
- A statement that the information in your notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you’re the owner or authorized to act for them.
When we receive a valid notice, we’ll remove or disable the content and tell the person who published it, and we may share the notice with them. If you believe your content was removed by mistake or misidentified, you can send a counter-notice to the same agent with your signature, the content and where it was, a statement under penalty of perjury that you believe it was removed by mistake, and your name, address and phone number, with your consent to the jurisdiction of the federal court where you live (or, outside the United States, any judicial district where we may be found) and to accept service from the person who sent the notice. We’ll send your counter-notice to them, and unless they tell us they’ve gone to court within 10 business days, we may restore the content.
We close the accounts of people who repeatedly infringe others’ copyrights.
Maps aren’t authoritative
Maps are made by the people who publish them and can be wrong, and basemaps and search come from third parties (see attribution). Don’t rely on a squidmaps map for navigation, emergencies or anything where a mistake could hurt someone.
Leaving
You can delete your maps any time, and email us to delete your account. We may end the beta or close accounts; if we do, we’ll give you a chance to export your maps unless something serious makes that impossible. The legal part below still applies after you leave.
The legal part
Disclaimers. squidmaps is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including that it’s fit for a particular purpose, accurate, or uninterrupted.
Liability. To the extent the law allows, we aren’t liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for lost data or profits, and our total liability for any claim about squidmaps is limited to US$100.
Indemnity. If someone brings a claim against us because of content you put on squidmaps or your breaking these terms or the law, you agree to cover the reasonable costs, damages and legal fees that result, to the extent the law allows.
Disputes. These terms are governed by New York law. Any dispute about them or squidmaps will be decided in the state or federal courts in New York County, New York, and you and we consent to those courts. Please email us first; most problems can be sorted out that way.
Changes. These terms will change during the beta. We’ll post small changes here with a new date at the top, without an announcement. For significant changes, we’ll tell you by email or in squidmaps at least 7 days before they take effect, unless the law or dealing with abuse needs a change sooner. If you keep using squidmaps after a change takes effect, you’re agreeing to it; if you don’t agree, export your maps and close your account.
Everything else. If part of these terms can’t be enforced, the rest still applies, and not enforcing part of them right away doesn’t mean we’ve given it up. We may transfer these terms as part of a merger, acquisition or sale of squidmaps.
