squidmaps is built on the work of many people who share their data, software, icons and fonts openly. Thank you. This page credits them and their licenses.
Map data
OpenStreetMap
The streets, places, water, parks and labels on every squidmaps basemap come from OpenStreetMap, made by its contributors and available under the Open Database License (ODbL). © OpenStreetMap contributors.
Protomaps
squidmaps’ basemaps are vector tiles from Protomaps, built from OpenStreetMap, drawn with styles modified from the Protomaps basemaps:
- Basemap design by Geraldine Sarmiento for Protomaps LLC (CC0). Code © Protomaps LLC and Kelso Cartography, BSD 3-Clause, including the Tilezen schema (MIT).
- Map icons derived from Mapzen’s tangrams/icons (MIT).
- Map fonts from protomaps/basemaps-assets: Noto Sans, under the SIL Open Font License.
Protomaps created the PMTiles format that its tiles are built in.
Geocode Earth
Place search in the editor is powered by Geocode Earth, built on the open source Pelias geocoder and open data from OpenStreetMap and others. © Geocode Earth, OpenStreetMap and others.
ZIP codes
Spreadsheets with US ZIP codes are placed using the internal points of ZIP Code Tabulation Areas from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2020 Gazetteer Files, which are in the public domain.
Routing
When routing is turned on, routes come from openrouteservice by HeiGIT, Geoapify or OSRM, each credited on the map while it’s in use.
Where the editor comes from
squidmaps began as a fork of Placemark, the open source map editor by Tom MacWright, © 2023 Placemark, MIT. Its license is kept in squidmaps’ own. squidmaps also uses Tom MacWright’s and Placemark’s libraries for reading and writing geographic formats:
- togeojson for KML, GPX and TCX (BSD 2-Clause)
- betterknown for WKT (MIT)
- check-geojson, geojson-rewind, osmtogeojson, polyline and tokml (MIT)
