How old is your council area?
Make your own map →382 council areas, coloured by their creating Act or Order year. Stronger colours separate the years; click an area for its age, operation year and statutory source.
Upper and single tier (218): 21 counties plus 197 single-tier areas, including unitary authorities, London/metropolitan boroughs, City of London, Scilly, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Lower tier (164): English districts within counties. NI councils are single-tier but do not have all the functions of English county councils.
Use the checkboxes below. Both folders start visible; turn off lower-tier districts to see a complete UK-wide upper/single-tier view and turn off the upper/single-tier folder to see the districts. No combined authorities or parishes.
Age means council area, not organisation or latest boundary revision. City of London stays grey: no single statutory birth year. Boundaries are generalised, not for legal use.
